How a Solar Geyser Works

Household water (direct system) or an anti-freeze agent (indirect system) is circulated through “collectors” installed on the roof. The collectors (vacuum tube manifold or flat plate) use the sun’s energy to heat the water or the anti-freeze agent.

Indirect Solar Water Heating System

If an anti-freeze agent is circulated through the collectors it is called an indirect system because the water in the geyser is not heated directly by the sun but by the heated anti-freeze agent which is passed into a lining in the solar water geyser to heat the water.

Direct Solar Water Heating System

If the geyser water is circulated through the collectors it is called a direct system because the water in the geyser is heated directly by the sun in the collector panel and is transferred into the solar water geyser.

Closely Coupled Water Heating System

The tank is mounted outside the roof together with the collector panels or evacuator tubes. The water in a closely coupled system is heated by the solar collector and circulated into the tank using a principle called thermosyphon.


A water circulation method which makes use of the fact that hot water rises and cold water sinks. The geyser must be installed higher than the solar collector. The solar collectors and geyser needs to be close to one another for the process to work efficiently.

Split System

The tank is installed inside the roof and collector panels or evacuator tubes are mounted outside the roof. Split solar water heating systems either use thermosyphon or a pump to circulate the water within the solar water heating system.

Pumped System

A water circulation method either driven by a solar controller or by a solar voltaic panel with a battery back-up. Pumps used in solar water heating systems are very quiet and draw very little electricity (less than 150 Watts).

Solar Water Tank

A solar water tank (geyser) is designed to keep the water hot and is manufactured for longevity.

Solar Collector

The water tank (geyser) is connected to the collector. The collecter could be panels or glass tubes.

Solar Geyser Anode

Solar water tanks come equipped with an anode which protects the tank from corrosion. Impurities stick to the anode and the anode corrodes instead of the tank metal. The anode is replaceable.

Electricity and Solar Water Geysers

Electricity is still partnered with solar heating. You will always have hot water, even on cloudy or winter days. The geyser thermostat will ensure that the water is retained at the required temperature.

Thermosyphon or Split?

  • Less maintenance.

Choose this option if you don't mind the tank on the roof; you don't want damage in the event of a burst tank; you want minimal maintenance of the system.

Split System

  • No tank visible.
  • More aesthetic.
  • More moving parts.
  • More maintenance.

Choose this option if you don't want the tank to be viewed on the roof; or the rules of the housing estate / complex don't allow for tanks on the roof; or the roof structure cannot handle the weight of the tank.
