Commercial Gas Installations

Ten gas bottle manifold

We are registered to perform LPG commercial gas installations and issue certificates of compliance.

A gas installation on a property is categorised as a commercial installation when commercial activities are performed on that property.

Gas installations on a residential property where a commercial activity is undertaken, for example a nursery school or a B&B or a hairdressing salon, makes the installation a commercial one.

We undertake a site visit or require sight of approved building plans before we provide the gas installation quotation.

Considerations

The quotation for the gas installation is usually one of the last things requested for commercial sites. The following are often overlooked which results in additional costs and delays.

  • Location of containers. There are strict gas regulations which all LPG installations must adhere to and the regulations are usually not referenced during the design of the site resulting in proposed locations not being compliant.
  • Cylinder capacity based on equipment consumption. The number of cylinders required is usually under-estimated.
  • Installed gas appliances require permits. In an effort to curb unlawful LPG installations, SAGA has established the Safe Gas Equipment Scheme (SGES) that is set to ensure that all equipment installed in South Africa has been tested and is in compliance with an international or nationally acceptable standard that is safe and fit for intended use. All equipment that has been declared fit for installation are rewarded a SAGA Equipment Verification Permit.
  • Fire department approval. Fire department approval is required. Drawings are submitted to the local fire deparment showing the amount of gas cylinders and where they are situated on the property. These drawings will be stamped upon approval by the department.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is required to ensure the continuous safety and operation of the installation. The following is a checklist of items which must be checked

  • Manifolds. Manifolds which have been designed, constructed and installed in accordance with industry standards will require a minimum of maintenance. A physical inspection every two years is advisable.
  • Pigtails should be inspected for signs of rapture, cracking, chafing and perishing. It is compulsory that pigtails be replaced every five years.
  • Support brackets and pipe work should be inspected for excessive corrosion.
  • All manually operated valves should be checked for full range movement and positive shut off as well as corrosion and other damages.
  • Hydrostatic relief valves must be inspected for corrosion and ingress of foreign material into the operating mechanism. Hydrostatic relief valves must be replaced after five years of service.
  • LP Gas pressure regulator. The pressure setting must be checked with all appliances running. It should be replaced after seven years of service.
  • The system must be leak tested whilst in normal operation
  • Pressure gauges, if fitted, must be checked for correct zero reading and operation.
